Scales Restaurant

Identity Architecture in Practice

Murphy partnered with Scales Restaurant to develop a complete identity system for one of the most celebrated dining destinations in the United States.

Located on Portland’s working waterfront, Scales reflects a refined interpretation of Maine’s coastal culture — grounded in material honesty, craft, and restraint. The identity was designed to mirror that experience, translating the atmosphere of the restaurant into a cohesive visual language.

The system extends across menus, printed materials, signage, and digital touchpoints — creating a unified presence that reflects both the precision of the cuisine and the character of the harbor.

Scales Restaurant logo featuring hand-drawn fish illustration and serif typography inspired by Maine coastal heritage.

Place Context

Scales is situated directly on Portland’s active waterfront, where working wharves, fishing vessels, and industrial materials define the surrounding environment.

The identity draws from this context — referencing maritime tools, textures, and typographic traditions rooted in coastal New England.

Identity System

The visual language combines hand-drawn illustration, restrained typography, and structured composition.

The iconic fish mark, paired with a refined serif wordmark, establishes a recognizable identity that feels both classic and immediate — balancing informality with precision.

Editorial Menus

Menus were designed as editorial objects — emphasizing hierarchy, readability, and material presence.

Typography, spacing, and layout reflect the rhythm of the dining experience, allowing the food and language to take precedence without visual noise.

Brand Environment

The identity extends into the physical space through signage, materials, and subtle visual cues that reinforce the brand without overpowering the environment.

Each touchpoint — from menu to interior detail — contributes to a cohesive experience rooted in clarity and restraint.

This project demonstrates how Identity Architecture can translate place, material, and cultural context into a cohesive hospitality experience.
