New England Distilling

Identity Architecture in Practice

Murphy partnered with New England Distilling to develop a comprehensive identity system for a heritage distillery rooted in generations of rye whiskey craftsmanship.

With origins tracing back more than a century, the distillery carries a legacy of American spirit-making shaped by time, material, and place. The identity was designed to honor that lineage while establishing a clear, contemporary presence for a modern portfolio of spirits.

The resulting system extends across bottle design, packaging, digital platforms, and physical environments — creating a cohesive identity that reflects both historical depth and present-day clarity.

A generational distilling legacy, structured for a modern New England spirit.

Heritage Context

New England Distilling is rooted in a long lineage of American whiskey production, with historical references informing both the spirit and its presentation.

The identity draws from that legacy — incorporating traditional forms, typographic references, and material textures associated with early distilling practices in New England.

Identity System

The visual system balances historical character with contemporary restraint.

Crest-based marks, structured typography, and a refined palette create a recognizable identity that carries across bottles, printed materials, and digital platforms without dilution or inconsistency.

Packaging Architecture

The bottle and label system was designed to communicate both lineage and clarity.

Each expression within the portfolio lives within a unified structure — allowing individual products to differentiate while maintaining a cohesive brand presence across the full range of spirits.

Brand Environment

The identity extends into the physical distillery, retail experience, and digital presence.

From signage to website to merchandising, each touchpoint reinforces the same visual language — creating continuity between product, place, and story.

This project demonstrates how Identity Architecture can preserve heritage while establishing clarity and continuity across a modern product and brand system.
